Antonio Ruperto, Sculptor
Though I have mostly been a contemporary surrealist painter, I also have great love for making figurative clay sculpture and, more recently, steel sculpture. Currently I have created several welded figurative sculptures, two of which were created to hold original paintings on concave picture planes within them. My purpose for the concave picture plane, with a five to eight foot length or height, is to increase the peripheral view of the person standing within it. This gives them a wider visual scope using less material and space than would be used for a conventional, flat painting.

With my mind’s eye I see many possibilities of combining the
visuals of two-dimensional paintings with the beauty of
three-dimensional welded sculpture. Currently I am working
on the creation of pieces that incorporate both my passion
for painted subject and my new-found passion for welded
sculpture. It is my belief that the marriage of the two is
possible in today’s art world.
